About the UV-TUNNEL
The Light Progress UV-TUNNEL is an in-line conveyor UV-C irradiator engineered to disinfect the surfaces of packages and trays as they travel along a production line. Distributed in the UK by VTM UK LTD, it delivers continuous conveyor UV-C disinfection at the point of flow, treating incoming and outgoing surfaces without interrupting throughput. Because germicidal UV-C at 253.7 nm inactivates micro-organisms by disrupting their DNA and RNA, the system provides both microbiological and virological disinfection in-line, removing the need for chemical disinfection on the line. The UV-TUNNEL is fully enclosed, so no UV-C light escapes the tunnel, supporting operator safety while packaging surface disinfection is carried out around the clock.
Chemical-free disinfection with no shadow effect
Conventional wet-chemical routines add cost, consumables, drying time and residue risk to a food or packaging line. The UV-TUNNEL replaces that step with dry, physical UV-C treatment. Its geometry is designed to eliminate the shadow effect, disinfecting all visible tray surfaces as items pass through, so decontamination is even and repeatable rather than dependent on manual coverage. This makes the in-line UV-C tunnel well suited to food production, packaging and processing lines where incoming and outgoing surfaces must be decontaminated continuously and without chemicals. Because the process leaves no residue and requires no rinsing, it integrates cleanly into existing hygiene protocols.
UV-C amalgam lamp, quartz sleeve and reflector
At the heart of the UV-TUNNEL is a UV-C amalgam lamp emitting at 253.7 nm, the germicidal wavelength most widely referenced for surface and air disinfection. A quartz sleeve protects the lamp and stabilises output, while an integrated reflector directs and concentrates irradiance onto the conveyor to make efficient use of the emitted dose. Amalgam lamp technology is chosen for its stable UV-C output across a working temperature range, which supports consistent, predictable performance on a moving line. Combined with a controlled conveyor speed of 0.1 m/s, the arrangement delivers a repeatable exposure to each tray surface passing through the tunnel.
Enclosed, IP68-rated, CE-marked construction
Built for demanding production environments, the UV-TUNNEL carries an IP68 rating for protection against dust and water ingress, making it appropriate for wash-down and high-hygiene settings. It operates from a 230 V, 50/60 Hz supply and is fully enclosed to contain UV-C emission within the tunnel. The unit is CE marked against the Low Voltage Directive (LVD), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), the Machinery Directive (MD) and RoHS, providing a clear compliance basis for integration into UK and European lines.
